NASA's Parker Solar Probe, which has touched the Sun, flew close enough to our star to see the fine details of the solar wind which are nothing but the turbulent plasma which consists of electron, proton and nucleus , including its origin in the Sun's atmosphere, called coronal holes where the solar wind moves ten times faster than normal regions.
With this, scientist were able to found out that the Auroras, which are supercharged by the solar winds can also disrupt the satellites, communication signals and also the astronauts.
Researchers found out from the study that the solar winds which are nothing but the continuous stream of charged particles which flows uniformly from the sun loses its characteristics when it come out from the sun's outer atmosphere known as Corona.
Through Parker Solar Probe(PSP) spacecraft, it is found that in the coronal holes( these are the places where sun's magnetic field comes out but these lines does not loops back) , stream of supercharged particles called Supergranulation flows is the origin of fast Solar winds which is present at sun poles.
When you compare with the speed of jet figher, these fast streaming supercharged particles can reach a speed of 1.7 million MPH which is thousand times faster. Since the coronal holes are mostly present near the sun's poles, there will be no major effect on the earth. But the problem comes is when the sun becomes more active then the coronal holes will form more widely which switches or flips the poles which makes the supercharged particles or Supergranulation flows more violently towards our Earth. So therefore the regions where the magnetic field reverses its poles are called as Switchbacks.
Now this geomagnetic storm disturbs the communication signals, satellites malfunction and also create a threat to the astronauts. When these coronal holes releases high energy fast supercharged particles it forms as a Bright spot when it is seen from the earth surface.
Is it threat to Earth?
If it want to reach the Earth it should travel a distance of 150 million Kilometers but by then it will become as a homologous Magnetic field.
